8th Grade Math Curriculum: Algebra 

(an advanced 7th grade class follows this curriculum) 
Eighth grade begins with reviewing linear equations and then spends time to make connections between linear graphs, equations, tables, and patterns. As students move seamlessly through these different representations, they move onto quadratic relationships. Topics are introduced through problem solving, experimentation, and collaborative group work. By the end of the course, students will be confident mathematical thinkers who can take leadership roles in math conversations and fully prepared for Geometry. Specific topics include:

• Linear relationships
• Graphing lines and quadratics
• Factoring
• Simplifying complex algebraic expressions
• Solving radical equations
• Solving quadratic equations

The middle school math curriculum is engaging and demanding and allows students to be able to delve deeply into math concepts. Our students “do math” with a deep understanding of how to apply procedures to real world math problems. Students develop mastery of mathematical skills and understandings over time, and work collaboratively in teams to solve problems using cognitive (math) and meta-cognitive (learning, cooperation, problem-solving) strategies. Group work is supported by individual preparation, practice and review. Our program prepares students to approach new and difficult problems with confidence. There is an opportunity for advanced classes for students who meet rigorous admission criteria combined with teacher recommendation.

For the eighth grade students who follow the advanced curriculm, they will take 

• course facilitates student discovery 
• development of deductive reasoning
• justification of conjectures through proof using various reasoning strategies

 

6th Grade Math Curriculum:
Sixth grade is a smooth transition from fifth grade math where students are not only learning new topics, but also going deeper in topics that they have previously learned. Students will learn how to explain their understanding through numbers, words, and symbols. Our classes focus on making connections between the topics so students are confident at applying their knowledge to all types of situations. Specific topics include:

• Representations of numbers
• Portions and data 
• Operations with integers and fractions
• Data analysis
• Probability
• Measurement
• Geometry 
• Proportional reasoning

7th Grade Math Curriculum: Pre-Algebra

Seventh grade begins with the introduction of variables. Throughout the year, students will investigate what a variable is and how it is used to solve problems. Real world situations are embedded into the curriculum so students can easily make connections between the algebraic symbols and their application within the problem. Specific topics include:

• Simplifying algebraic expressions
• Solving algebraic equations and inequalities
• Proportional relationships
• Percent increase and decrease 
• Linear representations
• Area and volume
