Judaic Studies
Meet the Director
Irit Eliyahu received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Tel Aviv University in Jewish history and geography and obtained her middle school credential and M.A.Ed. from the University of Judaism. She was the director of Judaic studies at Temple Emanuel Community Day School for 12 years. In recent years she has been part of the UJ faculty for the Masters of Education program, specializing in teacher training. She is a recipient of the Milken Exemplary Educator Award for her innovations in instruction and the field of education. Ms. Eliyahu joined the Sinai Akiba administration in 2005.
A Sacred Task
Sinai Akiba Academy is dedicated to the sacred task of educating and nurturing Jewish children to become accomplished, courageous and compassionate human beings who will make a difference in tomorrow’s world. We help each student develop a personal commitment to a life of Torah and mtizvot in the modern world, as well as a love for the Jewish people and Medinat Yisrael.
The Judaic studies curriculum is the “heart and soul” of Sinai Akiba Academy, providing students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to both particpate actively as members of the Jewish community and to maintain a vigorous commitment to human rights and the ideals of our democracy.
The Moral Significance of Study
As Jews, we believe that the act of study is in itself of moral significance. However, hand in hand with that study is active learning, incorporating those moral principles into our daily lives. Performance of mitzvot (translation), observance of Derech Eretz (proper standards of behavior), direct association with the Hebrew language and with Israel, celebration of holidays and life-cycle events—all strengthen and solidify the importance of our studies.
Developing a Strong Jewish Identity
Sinai Akiba students develop a strong Jewish identity. Through T’filah (daily prayer), the study of Hebrew, Jewish history, an appreciation for the land of Israel, and special events—such as Kabbalat Shabbats, holiday assemblies and celebrations—Akiba students feel rooted in their Jewish heritage. By the time they take their culminating trip to Israel in 8th grade, our students have an unshakable connection to the Jewish people. As they move on through high school, college and beyond, our alumni become leaders within the Jewish community
